Glasshouse Salon – Hackney
Whenever I say this out loud I realise how mad it is but… for years now I’ve hacked away at my own hair, getting my husband to make sure the back is straight(ish), bought the dip dye packs and just changed up as and when I feel like it on the colour front! I’ve recently been more mindful of the chemicals and products that I use on my hair and skin and wanted a more organic and natural approach to styling. Not only are all the hair products organic but they also have a selection of make up brands that are preservative free and organic. I initially went all out doing their makeup bag overhaul before plucking up the courage for a professional cut, protein treatment and then colour. Which obviously felt like the biggest treat! There’s so much to learn about this much more holistic approach to skin and hair care and I love that they do it so tastefully! Their blog is also a brilliant source of inspiration and provides a wealth of information. They’ve kindly done a little Q & A for the site which I’m so excited to share…
Makeup bag overhaul:
We offer a unique service in the salon which is designed to help you transition to more natural and organic beauty products. Our makeup bag overhaul service is essentially a detox for your makeup bag – you come armed with some of your most-loved makeup and we sit down with you and offer natural and organic alternatives to suit your routine, based on the range of brands we have in the salon. Our staff are all trained experts and can help with everything from tips to application and ingredients. You can drop us a line at email@example.com to book in and we just take a £30 deposit which will go towards any products you buy at the end.
Our top 5 essentials for building a natural and organic hair and beauty routine:
We are constantly telling clients that great hair starts in the shower and with an effective, sulphate-free shampoo. This one by Organic Colour Systems is suitable for most hair types and contains organic wheat and quinoa proteins that strengthen the hair and add volume. We would recommend everyone makes the switch to sulphate-free, particularly if you have colour-treated hair, as it doesn’t strip the colour as opposed to some traditional shampoos. This one is great for sensitive scalps too – with organic sunflower seed extract, green tea and lemon to leave hair feeling super clean and nourished.
American brand Ilia are known for their combination of organic-based formulas and sleek, shelf-worthy packaging (all 100% recycled aluminium). We are devotees to their lipsticks, which are high in pigment yet still manage to nourish and hydrate the lips – no drying out here. Cruelty free and made with silky soft certified organic cocoa seed butter, they are industry favourites when it comes to eco lipsticks. Try Strike It Up for a classic red or In My Room for a soft, pinky-nude.
You may have heard of cult natural brand RMS – the creation of celebrity makeup artist Rose-Marie Smith. They’re tiny multi-tasking pots made from raw, organic and food grade ingredients full of vitamins and antioxidants to help heal, hydrate and let skin breath. If we had to pick one hero RMS product it would be their original Living Luminzer. Designed to give you a subtle, ‘lit from within’ glow, the formula works best dabbled to the high points of the face, for light-catching perfection.
Lots of people are sceptical about natural deodorant, but there are some really great high-performing options out there that are gentle on the skin and – more importantly – actually work. The Natural Deodorant Co are one of the best. Made with unbleached shea butter and organic coconut oil, the balm is thick in texture and lasts all day. Vegan-friendly and cruelty free, we love their fresh-smelling pots.
Finding your favourite foundation is no mean feat. Which is why finding a natural or organic-based foundation can seem daunting. Jane Iredale were one of the pioneers of mineral makeup and one of the first brands to incorporate skincare benefits into their makeup. This means that their foundations are actually helping protect, heal or soothe the skin whilst offering a great finish. They have plenty to choose from, from the light, glow-y coverage of the Liquid Minerals (a tinted serum ideal for helping problem skin) to their PurePressed Mineral Base Mineral Foundation, which provides a foundation, concealer, powder and SPF all in one. All Jane Iredale products are formulated using no anti-irritant ingredients or parabens.
The ladies at the salon are so brilliant, seriously know their stuff and more than happy to help with whatever you want to find out more about. It’s a great step in the right direction if you’re wanting to go organic, cruelty and chemical free.
